FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy isn't only for moments of crisis. Many people begin therapy because they've reached a point where coping no longer feels like enough. Life may look successful on the outside while privately feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, or caught in familiar patterns. You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. If you're wondering whether therapy could help, that's often reason enough to begin the conversation.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and determine whether we're a good fit. Much of our time together will focus on understanding what's bringing you to therapy, the experiences that have shaped you, your current concerns, and what you're hoping will feel different in your life. This initial session helps me develop a thoughtful understanding of your needs so we can begin creating a treatment plan together.
There is no right or wrong place to begin. Some people arrive with a clear understanding of what's been difficult, while others simply know that something isn't working in the way it once did. We'll move at a pace that feels comfortable, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way.
By the end of our first session, you'll have a better understanding of how I work, and we'll begin identifying goals that feel meaningful and relevant to you.
What is the length of therapy?
The length of therapy varies depending on your goals, needs, and circumstances. Some clients come with a specific concern and remain in therapy until they feel they have made meaningful progress. Others find value in longer-term work as their understanding of themselves continues to deepen. We will revisit your goals together and discuss what feels most helpful over time.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to begin therapy. Referrals from physicians, lawyers, and other health professionals are welcome, but you may contact me directly to schedule a complimentary consultation.
How often will we meet?
Most clients meet weekly, particularly at the beginning of therapy. Meeting consistently allows us to develop momentum and engage more deeply in the work. Depending on your needs and circumstances, we can also discuss a biweekly or alternative schedule.
Do you offer in-person and virtual therapy?
I offer virtual sessions throughout Ontario. Virtual appointments take place through a secure video platform. If you are seeking virtual psychotherapy in New York, please visit my New York practice.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Katie Sussman Psychotherapy is an out-of-network practice in New York. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement. I provide superbills that you can submit directly to your insurer. Coverage varies by plan, so I recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about reimbursement for out-of-network psychotherapy.
